As in Japan, our house was totally "outdoor shoes free" and each member of the family had appropriate indoor footwear - slippers from a children's shop called Ted et Rosie for us kids and usually espadrilles for the parents. Espadrilles are still considered in our family as THE handsomest way of dressing a foot and being confortable. As kids we were expected to wear proper nightwear and a "robe de chambre" on top which we usually hated because it came in the way of play and because kids are always feeling too warm anyways. I guess a Mickey Mouse sweatshirt was acceptable too.
